SON LITTLE DEMON TO THE DARK

On the approach to his next album, titled New Magic, the Philadelphia artist Aaron Livingston does what he does best by retreating the tradition of soul and blues with his own minimalist, downtempo and utterly enchanting style. Here, Son Little introduces us to the LP’s closer, ‘Demon To The Dark’, a homage to his greatest musical influence - Washington Phillips. Like this modern musician, Phillips was known for his creative flair, performing traditional gospel hymns in his own fashion, while accompanying himself with the manzarene, a box-like string instrument of Phillips’ own making. In an attempt to connect with his idol, Son Little has tried to replicate the manzarene with an Suzuki Omnichord, resulting in this eerie, minor note-heavy instrumentation. Throughout, Livingston begs for salvation in a world of vices, “Mr Phillips, can you hear me? My dear old man, now are you there? Feels just like the world is ending, is there some way to get it clear?” Explaining the intention of ‘Demon To The Dark’ a little further, Son Little explains that Washington Phillips’ music is where he turns when he’s feeling low, as ”his music gives hope, because it sounds like love and forgiveness." - HT
